Winter Updates from Heads of Sport

Winter sport has well and truly kicked off around Wellington. Marsden teams are right into their season, with most teams already completing the grading rounds and getting started on the competition. All teams across the school are training well and having a great time playing. There are also a number of tournaments and exchanges coming up before the end of the term.

Have a read of what our Heads of Sports have to say about their sports this year!

Football

Marsden Football is back for 2025 with two teams—our 1st XI and a Junior team. The 1st XI includes lots of new players and the team has been working hard to build strong connections and develop their game. They’re aiming to compete in the Girls' Division 1 grade and continue the momentum from last season. The Junior team is also off to a great start and looking forward to what promises to be an exciting season!

Hockey

Hockey at Marsden has started strong this season with a great pre-season tournament in the Wairarapa where our 1st XI played four games, winning two. One highlight was a 14–1 win that included a hat-trick from Esha and a double hat-trick from Yasmin! It was a great way to kick off the season with fun and team bonding.

Our 1st XI is competing in Division 1 this year, where they’ve had a win and a very close loss so far. Meanwhile, the 2nd XI is playing in Division 4 and aiming for promotion—starting off with two solid wins!

A huge welcome to our new coaching team: Foy Kerkin and Colette Mackenzie for the 1st XI, and Georgie Pennicott for the 2nd XI. And massive congratulations to Foy, who has just been named in the New Zealand Under-21 Men’s Squad—we are so proud!

Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey is off to a fast-paced start in 2025 with one senior and one junior team. Both teams are training hard each week in preparation for Centrals. Despite smaller team numbers, the energy and commitment are high, and both teams are looking forward to a competitive and fun season ahead.

Badminton

Badminton at Marsden is booming this year with a record number of players and teams! For the first time ever, we have introduced Year 7 and 8 teams who are competing in the Karori Rec Centre League. We’ve also been lucky to have coaching support from Wellington Badminton to help our juniors grow their skills. Whether playing socially or competitively, everyone is loving being on the court.

Netball

Netball is well underway for 2025 and it’s been a great start across the board. With a mix of social and competitive teams, everyone is getting involved and having fun. Senior A is currently sitting second in their premier grade, with a shot at climbing even higher. Junior A is leading their grade and working hard to move up. All our teams are showing great determination and teamwork!

Basketball

Marsden Basketball is going strong in 2025, with games taking place across the region every Friday night. Our Senior A team—made up of both juniors and seniors—is undefeated so far and has secured a place in the Premier League! We also have a senior social team, a junior team, and a Year 7/8 team. We’d love to see more Marsden supporters in the stands, so keep an eye on College Sport for game info!
