The Weekly Sports Roundup is a chance for Marsden to highlight some of our many teams that compete weekly against other schools in the Wellington region. A range of teams from across the school will be chosen each week to provide a report about their game that week, as well as any other fun details about the team’s season. These reports will be posted each Tuesday, so make sure you keep a lookout for your own or your friends team’s write ups!

Underwater Hockey - Junior A
Head Coaches: Emma Egley & Jade Stapleton
Manager: Chris Peddie-Burch
The Junior Underwater Hockey team played their hearts out on Friday and ended the night with one win (7 to 4) against Wellington Girls East and one loss (5 to 3) against Wellington Girls Black. The team was down 3 regular players because of illness and injury but we're thankful to those that stepped in at really short notice. The team is 2 weeks away from the central tournament. They are training hard and hoping they can secure their place at the national tournament in Auckland later in August. If any of your girls enjoy swimming, then I can't stress enough what a fantastic team sport this is to get into. We'd love to hear from you.

Hockey - 1st XI
Head Coach: Bjorn Dix
Assistant Coach: Katie Mackenzie
Manager: Lisa Merwood
Friday night saw the Marsden 1st XI take out a well-deserved win against Tawa. After last Friday's match, we went into the game determined and with the right mindset to do our own positional jobs and stay calm and collected. The first quarter was a clean one; Marsden spent most of the 15 minutes working in our scoring circle, which paid off with a fast shot from Yasmin straight into the corner, giving us a one-point lead and some extra confidence. As always, there were some improvements to make and the goal for the next quarter was to progress from that level of play. Tawa challenged us well and there was a lot of backwards and forwards from each goal end, with Tawa eventually evening the score one all. Going into the second half, 1-1 was a fresh slate for us to start on and half way through the third quarter, Lucy K got us in the lead with a choice deflection on post from a pass from Charlotte. Tawa had increasingly more time in their half but the team managed to keep them at bay with some very close calls and some amazing saves. In the last twenty seconds of the game, there was a PC called against us and it didn't look like the odds were in our favour. However, Joyce saved the night with a beautiful kick of the ball.

Hockey - Year 7 & 8 Korimako
Head Coaches: Emily & Charlotte
Manager: Justin Lester
This week, Marsden Korimako faced the Naenae Kwik Sticks and won 4-0. Every player did a fantastic job. Maddie L was an excellent scorer and Maddie F seemed to be everywhere! Clara did an outstanding job in goal and Olivia was always in the right spot. Sophie also went in for some really good tackles throughout the match. The weather was a real change from the previous weeks. Absolutely perfect and the sprinklers thought so too! Player of the day was Victoria (me) as a wide defender for most of the game. The game plan this week really paid off and the victory was a team effort. Shout out to the parents and our coaches for supporting us. We would be a mess without your advice!

Badminton - Senior B
Kia ora! We are the Senior B badminton team and last Friday we played WGC, pulling out a very close win 4-3. The game was challenging but we still enjoyed playing together as a team. It can be strange thinking of badminton as a “team sport” when often most of our players are off the court and there are never more than two of us on at a time—but we are always engaged with the game and supportive of our teammates as well as those on the opposing team! We always have lots of laughs and it is fun to be competitive, meet new people, and play to win!

Basketball - Senior A
Coach: Sarah Molisa
Manager: Libby McKinnon
Friday night was one of our best games this season. We have adapted to playing zone defence now and the girls are stepping up their defensive game. We didn't get into foul trouble this week which was excellent so it did not impact the game.
Asha had a strong game finishing nicely at the rim on multiple occasions, drawing fouls as she went. With Phoebe Gray out with injury we called up two junior A players and their impact was both beneficial and needed for sub rotation.
Super proud of the effort from all team members and our skills are developing every single game.

Netball - Junior B
Our Year 9 Netball team had a very exciting game on Saturday morning against St Mary’s 11. It was very tight with the score going back and forth throughout the game. We lost the first quarter 4-6 but improved to end up winning 23-18.

Netball - Keruru
This season has been great for us. We won most of our grading games and got into B Grade. So far we have won all the games and are at the top of the table which puts us under a lot of pressure. I think everyone has been so dedicated to games and dug deep during tough times. This week we had a very tough game. I thought we played as a team very well, managing to tie. Also I would like to acknowledge Anabelle who had a great game, coming back after a pre-season wrist injury. Here’s how our team felt about this week’s game:
Lee (coach): “It was a tough game today but the girls dug in. I am very proud of the girls. They played magnificent in tough circumstances and they stayed well as a team which was nice to see.”
Anika: “What I liked about the game was when everyone was contributing together and doing the 3 second rule”
Georgia: “Sometime we played good games and sometimes bad games and you have to be okay with the bad games”
Nellie: “It was a good game.”
Anabelle: “It was good, I felt that we played pretty well.”

Netball - K1
Over King’s Birthday weekend K1 played in a tournament in Lower Hutt. It was fun, exhilarating but tough. K1 played against four different teams. We won two of our games and lost the other two, but overall as a team we did very well as we played good netball together and didn’t lose our team spirit. First K1 played Blitz Creed Netball Academy. At the start it was a close game, with six all at half time, Blitz ended up winning the game 11-7. We had very good defence, as the score was tied all through the first half and stopped the Creed attack’s tricky moves. The offence in that game went very well because of good feeding into the circle and accuracy of shooting. Our second game we won 16-4 against Adventure Pulse, the team we played against was excellent as they had a fast midcourt which made this game harder to win. Our midcourt did an exceptionally good job defending their players and getting lots of intercepts.
We won our third game 12-8, against Fergy Falcons it was very close in the first half as the score was 6-5 at half time, our defence was strong as they had to adapt to the other team using strategies that we had not seen before. Winning that game got us into the top 8 playoffs (semi finals).
In K1’s last game we played against Thunder and lost 10-4, they were a fast team with good shooting accuracy and speed. Our defence did an amazing job defending the shooters as well as they could. The midcourt had very accurate passing to get the ball down the court.
In conclusion our tournament went really well, we played some close and tough netball and we all enjoyed it and learnt a lot.
